So, is it benefitical to get basic technique robust with close range practice. Most important ( and the biggest untold secret) of pistol / revolver shooting is understanding that sight picture is everything.

The simple reason and the real secret (!) is that if sight picture is misaligned, the error resultig from this is far bigger than the error of holding point of aim in slightly wrong place.

It is naturally always "hovering" over the target center / bullseye. You have accept this and just learn to form as perfect sught picture as possible AND THEN JUST LET THE PICTURE HOVER OVER THE BULLSEYE.
