They tried blowing the tower up from the bottom, which failed so instead they figured out that the towers would be easier to destroy when targeted in their weakpoint. You do not have to melt the steal beams for them to lose structural integrity. How do you think hammerforging e.g. a sword is done? And buildings that fall on their own weight, literally collapse on themselves straight down, they do not fall on their sides.
