23.07.2012 - 06:02:49 <anon> it isn't a muzzle 'break' folks, it is a muzzle BRAKE .. the design on that thing is specifically designed to slow down backwards acceleration of the barrel. Not to be confused with a flash suppressor, like on an old fashioned M16 (my era's rifle).

They're specifically designed to prevent muzzle elevation in a specific direction. It is NOT correct to refer to those as either 'muzzle brake' or 'flash suppressor'. 23.07.2012 - 06:19:26 <anon> The reason is that the original M2 machine gun design and .50 caliber ammo turned out to be so accurate that machine gunners were complaining they had to mow down the target area (beaten zone) aiming at specific targets to get hits. That's now the way a crew served machine gun is supposed to work. So the US military redesigned .50 cal ammo to be inaccurate so it sprayed a cone of fire instead of a single point 'hosing' fire.
